Technically noon is am.
Afternoon 12 am or pm. Yawl have fun with this one. So which is it. At 12 noon the sun is at its highest point in the sky and directly over the meridian. Is midnight am or pm.
1 am is one hour after midnight while 11 pm is one hour before midnight. Means noon and 12 p m. Pm post meridiem. Afternoon begins at noon and runs until evening.
Because of the potential for confusion it is advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight e. The abbreviation am stands for ante meridiem before the sun has crossed the meridian line and pm stands for post meridiem after the sun has crossed the meridian line. To avoid confusion many people do not use 12 a m or 12 p m. Am ante meridiem.

The clock ticks from 12 00 am noon to 00 01pm or 10 1000ths of a second if you prefer and begins counting toward 12 00 pm midnight where it repeats for the am cycle.
Since it is 12 hours before noon. The american heritage dictionary of the english language states by convention 12 am denotes midnight and 12 pm denotes noon. I know not what experts claim i m only using logic. And prefer to use midnight and noon.
For example 5 am is early in the morning and 5 pm is late in the afternoon.
